What we do >>> Activities.
At Visions for Nigeria Foundation, we believe in undertaking any project or new initiatives that can help us in making Nigeria a kinder and a gentler Nation. We are not skeptical of new initiatives and ideas from whatever source (if it is driven towards achieving this objective) except if it is not in good faith. Our various activities over the last few years of our operation include:
Outreach
Our outreaches have been major on our calendar for the year. We have taken a centre focus on Kabusa, a village near Apo in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), FCT which though somehow close to civilization still lacks evidence of it. During our outreaches, we go to remote areas which do not have enough government attention, and we provide basic needs like distribution of packaged food to impoverished people, provide free medical services through our medical team which is made up of qualified medical doctors and other medical personnel. We distribute free drugs and other relief materials (like clothing, shoes, bags, toys) and educational materials. We have also been providing assistance to the village’s only school as much as we are able.
HIV/AIDS
We have had various programmes geared towards fighting the HIV/AIDS and reducing its spread. Most of these have been in form of condom distribution to hotels and brothels, HIV/AIDS campaigns, sex education to young people and adults, and care for people who are living with HIV/AIDS. We try as much as we can to raise funds and ensure that these endangered people have access to the medical help, care and attention, which they need to move on with their lives. We also care for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The new additions to this care-list are pupils from Kabusa village school.
School an Orphan
School an Orphan programme was originally established to help Children orphaned by HIV/AIDS but we have extended the program to cover orphans whose parent(s) died by one unfortunate incident or the other and whose remaining Guardian is not capable of providing tuition and school needs. This programme is to enable these orphans stay in school and at least achieve a primary-level education. School an Orphan launched in 2nd quarter, 2006 is affecting more lives.
Our programme coordinators regularly monitor and evaluate the academic as well as psychosocial performance of our beneficiaries. Our programme and services have reached out to a growing number of clientele in Abuja, FCT.
Presently, we are in conjunction with WAP Foundation to run a Nursery and Primary school for orphans and other less privileged children at Kabusa village in the Abuja Municipal Area Council F.C.T.
In an effort to sustain this programme and reach out to more beneficiaries throughout Nigeria, we need your help in form of cash or in-kind donations for the following:
- Books, Uniforms, school supplies, Tuition and Transport allowance.
People Against Drunk Driving and Substance Abuse (PADDSA)
This programme commenced recently and have gained lots of ground in educating people against the ills of Substance Abuse and Drunk Driving. This was done in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Drivers’ Welfare Club. We continue to canvass for more volunteer organizations and individuals to help us propagate the message of PADDSA.
Project ACE
Our Accelerated Computer Education (ACE) Project is a new initiative from one of our volunteers which aims to fast track computer education of Nigeria’s teeming IT-illiterate young population. By providing quality and affordable IT education, we believe we can save our Nation from low productivity and high unemployment figures caused by lack of relevant computer education. This we aim to achieve by partnering we major IT-Education institutes, so that they can reduce their fees by at least 20%. We would then go an extra mile to market those programmes to our target population (senior secondary students, university undergraduates, corps members and unemployed graduates). Funds are also going to be raised from NGOs and private institutions to further subsidize the programme. This programme also includes compulsory leadership training for all the participants. Pioneer IT courses are AutoCAD, Desktop Publishing, Web-design & Development and Computer Engineering & Networking. We believe that the world is now moving at a very fast pace on the wheels of technology, and Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind.
Millennium Campaign
We participated actively in the Stand-Up Millennium Campaign (our campaign no is ….) of October 15th and 16th 2006, which paraded over 23million people in 12,000 events across 100 countries, to demonstrate our support to the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. We all stood up to tell our leaders across the world in no uncertain terms to actively improve on their stand against poverty and the eight point agenda of the MDGs.
Community Help!
Our programme is aimed towards reversing rural-urban migration. It focuses on meeting specific strategic needs of rural communities and make them more comfortable for dwellers of the rural community. To accomplish this, Visions for Nigeria goes into rural communities and tries to identify strategic needs of those communities and then initiate community oriented programmes aimed at alleviating such problems.
We go the extra mile to source for more funding where required to sponsor such programmes just to ensure that those strategic needs are met. Most commons needs of many rural communities in Nigeria are access to portable water, sanitation and medical help. There is no limit to the activities and involvement of Visions for Nigeria, your volunteer NGO. Chances are that the fact that you are reading this makes you a potential volunteer to any of our activities.
SKILLS ACQUISTION TRAINING
Visions for Nigeria Foundation helps the needy especially widows and youths old enough to earn a living build skills in their areas of interest.
Our goal is to empower these Widows to enable them earn a living and remove the youths from the streets and turn them to productive citizens who can make good contributions for the development of the nation. In order to sustain this programme and increase the number of skills acquisition programme beneficiaries, your cash or in-kind gift will be highly appreciated to provide the following:
- Tools and equipments, Reference materials.
- Accommodation and transportation for resource persons.
 ADVOCACY
We promote positive policy changes by directing the attention of people of various communities towards solutions to Gender equality and HIV/AIDS related issues. We carry out community sensitization regarding Gender equality, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. We continue to build an enabling environment that incorporates orphans and people living with HIV/AIDS in the community rather than exclude them. Through our Advocacy program, schools are enhanced to establish sexual and reproductive Health centers where adolescents can access information on Health, HIV/AIDS and other Infectious diseases. We also advocate for transparent and accountable use of public resources and by addressing issues of corruption through judicial reforms and accessibility.
MICROFINANCE
In Visions for Nigeria Foundation, we believe that poverty can be reduced by implementing sustainable, innovative and effective microfinance initiatives, thus our microfinance programme came to be. Our programme is designed to empower Nigeria’s poorest by providing affordable Capital, Financial services and Capacity building resources. Microfinance programme is in response to a challenge brought about by the widows and youths who are in need of skills training that will enable them earn a living to support their families. Once equipped with the proper tools and skills of trade, they need a start-up capital to get their business going. The aim is to provide small grants that will fund sustainable income-generating projects for impoverished families. This program will provide financial assistance as well as support for proper business management and sustainability.
Your support will help us sustain this programme which empowers the skilled but financially challenged people of the nation. Those who rely on their skills for a living will be afforded the opportunity to engage in small-scale enterprise from where they can earn a living. We will appreciate contributions in the form of:
- Financial services.
- Technical training.
